Get Fresh!

One thing we can count on to change as we get older – our body!

In our twenties, we can eat whatever we want, drink whatever we want and party like it’s 1999.

In our forties, not so much. There’s a little pain when we get out of bed.  If we eat whatever we want, we feel it the next day with pants that are a little too tight.  And drink? We definitely feel that the next day, too. A little goes a long way.

I can’t change my body.  I can’t miraculously make it younger. Or lose weight at the drop of a hat. Or live that carefree life.  I need to get FRESH!

I created a simple poster that I taped to my bathroom mirror to remind me.  If you would like a copy, you can get it here.

Forget the junk food.

I’m a foodie!  I love food.  Most of my life I’ve lived to eat. Now, it is catching up with me!  I haven’t always made the right food choices.  Nowadays, there are So. Many. Diets.  So many ways to “eat right”.  I get a headache thinking about it!  So, as a simplified version, I just forget the junk.  That usually involves some sort of sugary food or drink or fried food – some of my favorite things.  But I realize that is not the best for my body.  A special treat once every 6 months or so is OK but not weekly.

If you are just starting out on your health journey or coming back to it, this is a good place to start.  It’s not too overwhelming.  You could also add 5 fruits or veggies a day but don’t stress!  It’s good to start somewhere.  If you drink a soda every afternoon, change it to tea or water.  A candy bar or donut? Try a protein bar (there are some good ones here or here!). Or eat a piece of fruit.  Honey crisp apples are my favorite! Forget the junk!  Make better choices!  You can do it!

That high you get from sugar whether from candy or a sugary drink, is intoxicating.  Some would even say lifesaving!  But is it worth the crash that will happen 30 minutes later?  The temptation then arises to ingest another sugary substance and so the roller coaster of sugar highs and lows keeps going. Let’s break that cycle!  Let’s make better choices!  Is it hard?  You bet!  But it is so worth it in the long run.

Food is important on this health journey.

To help your body function to its greatest potential, you must give it good fuel.  Have you ever filled your car with bad gasoline? It does not run right.  It spurts and sputters and sometimes just quits!  Same thing with our body, though at first, it is not as noticeable. It will catch up with you eventually. The better the fuel, the better we function.  The worse the fuel…

Right now, take baby steps. You can Paleo, Keto, THM or Whole30 later in your health journey.

I have decided to break this subject up into several posts. Part two, Relish Today will appear next week.

What has helped you forget the junk food in your health journey?

Who knows but God what other roles will come along? But she will always be a wife and a mother and lover of Jesus!
